In ill health we usually seek healing through modern medical science, but it may also prompt us to ask deep questions about meaning and spirituality. Therefore healing is an important area of thought in the science and religion debates which have recently seen a shift in emphasis to consider the role of human experience epistemologically at the interface of where these two magisteria meet. In this talk, Gillian will explore this new area of thought and ask what theology and human experience can bring to our understanding of healing.

The Revd. Dr. Gillian K. Straine is the Director of the Guild of Health and St. Raphael (www.gohealth.org.uk). An Anglican Priest, she also has a doctorate in Physics from Imperial College London and an MA in Theology from the University of Oxford. She is the author of Introducing Science and Religion: A path through polemic (SPCK, 2014) and Cancer: A Pilgrim Companion (SPCK, 2017). She lives in London with her husband and two young children.

Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona: Implications of the Social Brain Hypothesis: Integrated Indigenous Wisdom and Neuroscience

Increasing evidence is emerging that the brain is largely shaped by our social experiences through neuroplasticity, Social experience may have more powerful effects on gene expression through epigenetics than classical heredity. The audience effect means that gene expression is more powerful when we are in the company of others than when we are alone. This research is converging with indigenous knowledge that healing occurs within the context of community and that our social relationships make us who we are. I will speak about the neuroscience, the indigenous knowledge, their convergence, and our research findings in relation to this, including the impact of healing circles/talking circles on symptom relief and quality of life in primary care, the power of group healing and peer counseling/support for people who have psychosis, and the role of group self-medical care on improving health for people with diabetes, asthma, and pregnant women with drug and alcohol problems. In all these contexts, the power of group and community for healing is demonstrated. We conclude with the implications for the future of medicine and psychology.

Complexity and the Implicate Order Bohm-Prigogine Centenary Conference

2017 marks the centenary of two of the most creative scientists of the 20th century, Prof David Bohm FRS (1917 – 1992) and Prof Vicomte Ilya Prigogine (1917 – 2004). Both men thought out-of-the-box, and introduced new and influential concepts that have had a wide reach outside their specialist fields. The Network arranged a weekend of dialogue with David Bohm in 1988, and a day with Ilya Prigogine in 1995, which was attended by more than 400 people. Both were Honorary Members. Addressed by experts who worked closely with both men, this centenary conference will consider their legacies and the extensive influence, showing how their ideas still shape our thinking.
