39th Annual Mystics and Scientists Conference – Non-locality and the Oneness of Mind
The Mystics and Scientists conferences have been held every year since 1978, and are dedicated to forging a creative understanding of the complementary roles of scientific and mystical approaches to reality. The conferences always provide a highly engaging and creative opportunity to come together with like-minded people in a spirit of exploration and dialogue. Our theme brings together physics, philosophy, psychology, spirituality and healing, which speakers will address from their various angles of expertise to show how the oneness of mind has crucial implications for the way we live our lives and relate to each other. At a deep level it seems that we are one another and we need to overcome the superficial illusion that we are separate beings.
Building upon the success of this format for the “Beyond the Brain 2015” conference, Mystics and Scientists 2016 will be a participatory experience. We will use café style seating to help initiate table discussions and sharing of experiences. Speakers will provide practical reflections and exercises along with a sharing of their expertise. In addition, there will be optional meditation and movement each morning, time for small group exchanges and optional workshop sessions after lunch on Saturday and Sunday. All in all, it promises to be an unforgettable weekend.

Dr Peter Fenwick is a neuropsychiatrist and neurophysiologist who is known for his studies of epilepsy and end-of-life phenomena. Dr. Fenwick is the current President of the SMN. He is a senior lecturer at King’s College, London, where he works as a consultant at the Institute of Psychiatry.
David Lorimer, MA, PGCE, FRSA is a writer, lecturer and editor who is Programme Director of the Scientific and Medical Network. He is also President of Wrekin Trust and a Founder of Character Education Scotland.
Programme Saturday 16th April
AN opening wine reception, will be followed by dinner and welcomes from the President, Dr Peter Fenwick and the SMN Chair Dr Paul Filmore. Dr Paul Filmore PhD, MBA, MInstPhys, CPhys, FHEA, FRSA lectures in personal & professional development, entrepreneurship, electronics and business management, predominantly to postgraduates at the University of Plymouth, after having been a research physicist for many years.
Programme Director David Lorimer will introduce the conference with a talk on Empathetic Resonance, Non-locality and the Universal Mind.
Studies of psychometry, intuitive diagnosis and the near-death experience life review indicate that we are capable of feeling what it is like to be someone else – this is empathetic resonance. If this is the case, our minds and psyches must be connected at a deep level through each of us being an individual expression of the Universal Mind. From this insight arises an ethic of interconnectedness that encourages us to follow the Golden Rule: if we are one another then what we do to others we do to ourselves.
Programme Friday 15th April
Dr Larry Dossey: ONE MIND: How Our Individual Mind is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters – Part 1 (Part 2 Sunday)
The current view of consciousness is that it is produced by the brain, is confined to the brain, and is annihilated with physical death. In contrast, the great wisdom traditions affirm that there is a collective, universal mind, of which all individual minds are a part. This image of consciousness has been affirmed by recent scientific evidence suggesting that conscious is nonlocal — that it is infinite in space and time, therefore immortal, united, and one. Dr Dossey will examine the implications of this emerging view of the mind for health, healing, creativity, and human welfare. He will show that we are arriving at a view of consciousness that transcends death and annihilation, and that portends a majestic view of what it means to be human.
Dr Larry Dossey is an internal medicine physician, former Chief of Staff of Medical City Dallas Hospital, and former co-chairman of the Panel on Mind/Body Interventions, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, National Institutes of Health. He is executive editor of the peer-previewed journal Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing. He is the author of twelve books on the role of consciousness and spirituality in health, which have been translated into languages around the world. His most recent book is ONE MIND: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters. He lectures around the world. Dr. Dossey lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, with Barbara, his wife, who is a nurse-educator and the author of many award-winning books. (www.dosseydossey.com)
Prof Tom Mcleish FRS: Non-local Quantum and Classical Physics: the Idea of Strong Emergence
There is a continued debate in the philosophy of science around the thorny idea of ‘emergence’ and it’s implication for a reductionist ontology of nature. In particular there have been attempts to qualify emergent phenomena in degrees of strength: ‘weak emergence’ describes the collective behaviour of large systems of degrees of freedom implied by their microscopic constraints, while ‘strong emergence’ would describe coarse-grained phenomena in principle non-reducible to the microscopic degrees of freedom.
I report here on results from the Templeton-funded ‘Durham Emergence Project’ of physicists and philosophers, in which the classical case of condensed fluids of ring-polymers and the quantum case of the fractional quantum hall effect call on non-local topological constraints to create coarse grained effects that possess a high emergent ‘strength’.
Tom Mcleish FRS is Professor of Physics at Durham University. His scientific research over the last 25 years has contributed to the formation of the new field of ‘soft matter physics’ – interdisciplinary work with chemists, chemical engineers and biologists has sought to connect molecular structure and behaviour with emergent material or biological properties. He has also worked intensively with industrial researchers developing molecular design tools for new polymeric (plastic) materials, leading large national and international programmes, with his personal contributions mostly theoretical. Throughout he has also maintained an interest in public engagement with science, science policy and public values including the underlying, but often hidden, public narratives of science. He has been especially interested in the potential for theological narratives to inform debates in science and technology, both explicitly and implicitly. He explores historical, sociological and theological approaches to contribute to a long cultural narrative for science in the recent book Faith and Wisdom in Science.
Dr Helen Ford: Harnessing the Power of the Soul
The free flowing soul’s truth can contribute to the healing of disease as well as bringing about contentment and fulfilment. Helen will explain how this natural free flow can be inhibited and over-ridden by the patterns of untruth that lead to unhappiness and disease. She will demonstrate how she uses a system of aura diagnosis to access memories that are relevant to understanding both the origins of these patterns and the aspects of soul’s truth that will help to displace them. She now believes that the deepest healing takes place when someone comes to feel true love for their own inner being.
Dr Helen Ford is a holistic physician who initially worked with conventional medicine. She gradually realised that there was more to illness than the conventional medical models take into account. So for the last thirty years she has focused on ways of accessing the energy patterns that underlie unhappiness and disease and nourishing the aspects of soul’s truth that need to be brought forward to bring about healing – this involves accessing a series of relevant memories from a client’s aura which lay out the evolution of the main pattern of behaviour that is contributing to the current problem together with the external triggers and the internal (soul) solution. She loves doing this work because of the potential for happy endings as the inner being always has the solution to any difficulty that may arise. Helen has five children and a three-legged cat, and loves being in Nature. (www.drhelenford.co.uk)

Vera Helleman: Effortlessly Being yourSelf – (Indisposed)
‘Effortlessly being yourSelf’ is a step-by-step guide from ego-living – based on fear and greed – to living one’s mature spiritual potential based on self-expression and growth. Vera encourages people to take full responsibility for the role they play in their lives, and the path they tread upon. In all of her teachings, her aim is to give insight and tools, enabling the shift to a more congruent life, and increasing understanding and enjoyment of what one attracts in one’s life. Although her teaching-style is sharp and bright, she has the remarkable capacity of remaining playful and subservient in her contact with others. Interactions are thus based on equality, and serving both selves.
Vera Helleman is an inspiring and well-established speaker, with great popularity in The Netherlands and Belgium. After being a psychotherapist for a while, Vera awoke into oneness and was gifted with the full understanding of the functioning of the human mind, the essence of who we are, and the role which we play in creation. Looking from an energetic level and non-dualist point of view, she has the ability to confront people lovingly with their misconceptions about who they truly are and how this reality functions. Being married, a mother of four and standing with both feet firmly into daily life, people find her vivid appearance a recognisably example of living the art of life that resonates to one’s own longing to live. Vera is author of the book ‘Effortlessly being yourSelf’. Visit Vera’s web site at: www.verahelleman.co.uk.
Marja de Vries: The Whole Elephant Revealed: Insights into the existence and operation of Universal Laws and the Golden Ratio
The universal laws and golden ratio are the underlying principles of the dynamic balance and harmony in the universe. I’ll describe these universal laws based on the common insights of all wisdom traditions on the one hand and on cutting-edge scientific discoveries that are in line with those insights on the other hand. This synthesis reveals a coherent worldview. It shows the operation of the universe as a whole, including everything and leaving nothing outside the picture. Therefore, it provides a framework within which the many different aspects of ourselves and of the world around us fall into place as pieces of a puzzle. These insights reveals who we really are, what is our full potential and above all, they help us to understand what really works and what doesn’t work. For everything that is in line with these universal laws takes minimal effort, is in tune with who we really are and is in balance and harmony with the greater whole, contributing to the well-being of everyone and everything. Because these principles are universal, they apply to all aspects of our individual and social life. They help us to understand what is needed to restore personal balance as well as global balance.
Marja de Vries studied biology and ecology at the RUU (Rijks Universiteit van Utrecht) and RUG (Rijks Universiteit van Groningen) in The Netherlands and also worked as a fabric artist. She visited several indigenous cultures and developed her intuition and her insights in the non-physical reality mainly through trainings based on North American indigenous traditions and personal direct experiences. She has a clear vision of the future, sees the big picture and is able to recognize universal patterns. She is the author of the best-selling book De Hele Olifant in Beeld (2007), which is published in English in 2012 as The Whole Elephant Revealed and was published in German in 2014. In The Netherlands she is a highly regarded and popular speaker. Her second book Societies in Balance, toward a future in harmony with the universal laws was published in Dutch in 2014. www.marjadevries.nl
