Dr. Sheelah James, MB ChB, FRCPsych, DPM, MA (Religious Experience) was a Consultant Psychiatrist at The Woodbourne Priory Hospital following her retirement from the NHS. She qualified from Birmingham University Medical School and after the obligatory posts in medicine and surgery chose to specialise in psychiatry. Her career of over 40 years as a psychiatrist included research, examining for the Royal College of Psychiatrists and work as a Second Opinion Appointed Doctor under the Mental Health Act. She was also medical adviser to a branch of “Relate” and to a bereavement counselling service. Her interests include the interface between science and mysticism, altered states of consciousness, comparative religion and spirituality,music, dance and languages. She has published on hypnosis, behaviour therapy, psychosexual problems, and the near death experience. In addition to the SMN she is also a member of the Alister Hardy Society for the Study of Spiritual Experience, Bede Griffiths Sangha and the World Congress of Faiths.
